Battle Of The Books: Genre Vs. Literary
An attempt to struggle with what defines the difference between literature and genre works. Stephen Graham Jones knocks down a lot of the false distinctions and seems to offer a few possible signposts:
- “Literary” may be That Which Subscribes to No Conventions. (Although some “literary” works are conventional.)
- Literature may be fiction of sufficient depth that it can be returned to again and again. (Although so can some works otherwise defined as genre.)
- Works that target an audience may be genre.
- Genre works tend to be about ideas or a premise, while literature is primarily about people.
